'Ohi'a lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha) is the most common native tree in the Hawaiian islands, and plays a key role in Hawaiian ecosystems as a food source and nesting site for endemic birds. It has feathery, puff like flowers, most commonly blooming in a fiery red, but sometimes ranging to yellow or white. 'Ohi'a grows easily on lava, and are usually the first plants to colonize lava flows, bringing seemingly dead areas back to life. Recently, 'Ohi'a has been seriously threatened by a strain of fungus called Ceratocystis fimbriata, causing a new disease called Rapid 'Ohi'a Death. It gets this name, because healthy looking trees appear to die within just a few days or weeks. This one was growing in Keokea, Maui.
